COPENHAGEN (Reuters) – Denmark expects to start the operation by March on a long-sought plan to bring in 100,000 migrants from Turkey to cope with a projected influx of more Syrians, Iraqis and elsewhere.

Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said the Nordic country would be able to begin the operation as soon as possible, according to a government statement.
“A significant number of Syrians are expected to arrive before the middle of 2015,” the PM’s office said, estimating that 60,000 to 70,000 would arrive by the end of the year, or 10-15 percent of the population.
The government said it had raised some 70 million kroner ($10.1 million) through a combination of funding from private citizens and public contributions through a refugee fund.
The announcement came in the runup to a key European summit in Finland next weekend, where European leaders are due to discuss how to speed up the operation.
“We cannot cope with this alone,” said the premier.
“A lot of work will go into managing the influx,” he added.
Denmark is already helping countries bordering Syria and Iraq, which host the bulk of refugees arriving from Turkey, to screen and repatriate them.
The government is seeking private donations from private citizens and tax breaks to help support a plan to bring the arrivals from a dozen countries in the Turkish part of the Aegean Sea to Denmark.
Refugees from Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan were in Denmark last year.
