What is the best wood to make an outdoor sign?

The answer is to choose a piece of wood that has enough flex (flexibility) to be placed under the sun. It’s fine to use hardwood as well – it’s a great wood for your sign! I’m always on the lookout for woods that have good natural grain. I usually use a wide-leaf maple, but any kind of natural maple will work well. The main thing is to keep in mind that if you are using wood with knots (like maple), you will have a hard time with the sun on it for long intervals, whereas if other wood is used the length of time doesn’t really matter.

What type of wood do you usually choose for outdoor signs? The easiest way to answer this question is to ask yourself if you don’t want to cover the sign with fabric, or if you would prefer to have a more durable outdoor piece. When I see signs that are just covered with fabric I generally think “I want it to last”. I like an outdoor sign that is durable even if it may last for only a few years. That’s why I’ve used a variety of options – plywood, corrugated, etc… all of which offer different qualities and will provide a great longevity.

If you have already chosen the right tree for your sign, how long does it need to be? Most outdoor signs are intended to be used as long as they are left outdoors. Will signs last forever? Well most outdoor signs are designed to have a good life span. Most signs have been manufactured in the 1950’s and 1960’s. They tend to last for years.

How long will my sign be? Outdoor signs are designed to last a long time. Since signs are designed to be used several times, it’s common for outdoor signs to last 10 or more years! If you choose to use an outdoor sign, know that it will likely be covered with fabric or other materials that will need to be changed often – which will cost some money. Some signs just need to be covered for the rest of their life, the rest can be discarded.

How often do I need to change my signs? Your signs should be replaced between each use. You can use the fabric that is provided with your signs to change their colors, you can cover their insides with canvas and other materials,
