This week’s episode of The Daily Show has some of the funniest sketches around.

The show has been the go-to for satirists and political satirists.

That is now about to change.

“We are going to have a huge news show where it is going to be all news and we will just be doing news and news and news from the left and the right, and then we will just tell the story from the point of view of the most outraged,” Jon Stewart explained to me when we sat down in his Los Angeles office recently.

“We’re going to see if we can use this platform to try and get something off the ground,” he added. Stewart believes he has some ideas about this new show.

“The idea is if and when the president’s news conference goes really well we would turn the cameras on Donald [Trump],” he said. He added, “He’s one of our few celebrities that makes us feel good about being liberal or conservative, because he’s a Republican. But the last thing you want to be is anti-GOP because then you’re anti-Trump.”

Stewart has already had a bit of a moment on The Daily Show. In November 2015 a segment about Trump drew a record viewing audience: The show’s first two months.

A few months into his tenure, Trump had emerged as the favorite Republican presidential candidate, but the episode drew only 2.7 million viewers, the second-lowest audience for The Daily Show since 1992-93.

Stewart’s show has been the go-to for satirists and political satirists. That is now about to change. Watch the video above to get the backstory of how Stewart and his team have been getting their news from the left and the right.
