If you’re not in India, don’t worry. India’s saffron is the top saffron grower. You only need to get a good bag of raw saffron (which in this case refers to “yellow/reddish-pink” raw saffron) and keep at it long enough to reach this goal.

The main crop in India is turmeric, another spice whose roots are derived from a tree called the Indian mint plant. It’s used to flavour Indian dishes all over the country, both boiled and straight up. There’s also a spicy powder (saffron) used to flavor Indian curry, so it’s not as easy as buying turmeric in the States. (We’re getting ahead of ourselves…)

Saffron is also used in traditional Indian cooking and for the dyeing of cloth. Saffron is an incredible food plant, it has a sweet, smoky flavor similar to curry powder and it even contains vitamins. However, while it can be used in a number of ways as a food, most culinary enthusiasts are only familiar or intrigued with its use in food.

There are many ways to make saffron. The easiest way to get started is to buy a bag of the pure yellow/reddish-pink saffron. It will have a little amount of dried mint extract in it and you can put it or rub it into your mouth.

Then buy a cup or so of raw sugar and a cup of water. Mix them together using your fingers which should be soaked in cold water to help soften it. The two ingredients should be the same size in total volume in your glass and be as mixed together (so you don’t end up with sticky mess) as you can make them.

You can also use the sugar to do this instead of boiling water and then strain the water out as needed to let the sugar dissolved evenly into the milk.

Finally, add a quart of water to the milk. Let the two make-up a perfect mixture, adding the sugar once the whole thing is mixed. You could just mash it up and boil it if more
