DETROIT – With a couple of minutes left in the first period, a loose puck made its way into the right circle and trickled down the middle before being deflected by goalie Sergei Bobrovsky into the net.
“We were kind of just throwing pucks in the net, and it just kind of happened,” said Red Wings forward Darren Helm. “I didn’t know what was going to happen. I’m glad we weren’t in the penalty box, but it’s a little bit of a surprise. I don’t even like it where we are, and we’re just kind of going down.”
The game was in jeopardy. But Bobrovsky – not even the greatest goaltender in the world – saved the day.
The Red Wings went on to win, 7-2, behind Joe Vollman’s power-play goal at 1:49 of the second.
“Our big issue over the last 10 games when we haven’t won is not getting scoring,” the coach said. “So this gives us hope that we can get some. (That) is probably the greatest strength of our team.”
Vollman’s five-piece penalty shot started a three-goal scoring frenzy.
Drew Miller scored on an empty-netter, Mikael Samuelsson found the back of the net on a rebound and David Legwand made it 2-0 in the first 4:17 of the second to give Detroit its fourth win in five games.
“I don’t know what’s going on,” Miller said after the game. “It’s all luck.”
The Red Wings (19-28-8) lost for just the second time in 11 games, falling to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Phoenix Coyotes 1-2 on the road. Their last loss was also in Phoenix – 4-2 on Dec. 5.
“This team, in every game, comes out and plays hard, they play smart, they fight hard,” Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. “It starts with that. That’s not how you win in hockey when you allow the opposition some time and space.”
