US Republicans have promised to protect government workers’ jobs as part of a package of tax cuts, but have provided no details on how that would happen or whether any cuts could apply to the federal workforce.
The Republican “sequester” package of budget cuts, known to many as the “sequester”, took effect on 1 March after it was passed in the House of Representatives in February.
It is one of the most aggressive set of spending cuts that Congress has attempted to enact for the past 20 years.
But its implementation is not guaranteed and in some cases may be delayed.
It would cut $85bn (£70bn) from the federal budget, mostly by repealing large pieces of programmes.
The cuts, which were imposed in January, took effect on 1 March, but some of these have not been cut out.
