By the time the World Cup begins, more than 50 million Americans will have seen the first FIFA World Cup final — and there’s a chance that they’ll never make it. The majority of people will still not have seen the FIFA Confederations Cup, which was played in October in Brazil. And yet, more Americans will watch the semifinals and the final this summer than there were to watch the World Cup last year. And more than 10 million will be looking for their very own national team.

It’s more than a little ironic that when the World Cup starts last Friday, it will be the very first time that more people outside of Brazil will get to experience the game in real time, in a stadium with a population more than double the one that hosted the World Cup. FIFA hopes that the new venues for the finals will ease congestion at some of the stadiums that the hosts will play in. And it’s worth noting that the United States also won’t be the one to compete in a World Cup final until 2022. But the fact that this is FIFA’s most ambitious World Cup ever will likely make it much easier for the organization to raise money from countries that have little to no experience with soccer.

The United States has been trying to make inroads in soccer for a long time, but it has just never reached a level that matches the success of major leagues
