A. Not if you want to take better photos. The answer to that question is really difficult to answer, because there is no way to know whether you’re better at photography than someone else with a degree in it. If you’ve gotten the chance to see one good picture, you may think that you’re better than the world’s best. (I’m going to go out on a limb and say you’re still better—better in the sense that you can’t beat them at their own game.)
For me, photography has always been a way to see the world. As a kid, the world seemed like a very big place—but there was always me, standing outside of it, getting to see what was in front of me. The only difference between that experience and what I’d normally get as a high school graduate is that when I’m in school, I’m mostly on my own.
Is there a way to become a successful photographer? Do you have advice for other aspiring photographers, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, who may want to pursue photography as a career?
A. I don’t know, I haven’t studied for my photography degree yet. I feel like I might do all right, but I think all the stuff I know is probably kind of bad advice for anyone I know to follow. (In a perfect world, I could go to a camera school and learn every trick to perfect my photography technique so I could be a perfect photographer. But I have a job, and if I don’t feel comfortable taking pictures, I can’t afford to start a photography school.)
On the other hand, there is some advice for anyone aspiring to be a photographer. There’s no need to be like those photographers who are out there just because they know how to play guitar. There’s too much going on in the world now to be afraid of your picture. Take a look around you. Do you know anyone who you think may be capable of taking great pictures? That person isn’t there yet. Take a look at these people who were a little younger than you and might be like “Wow, I could take great pictures” and get inspired.
