In the wake of the recent shooting death of 17-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, the FBI is sending a team to Ferguson to investigate how the unrest has affected the city. The agency’s field office will be in St. Louis through August 31.
FBI director Christopher Wray said in a statement early Friday that the FBI’s field office in St. Louis “has opened a preliminary investigation to determine if any federal statutes have been violated during the Ferguson protests over Brown’s death.”
The St. Louis Police Department already had sent out a memo to employees about the FBI’s activities in the area. But it’s not certain how the FBI will approach the unrest, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The FBI also declined to comment.
“I’m not going to speculate,” St. Louis County Police Department Commissioner Steve Koop told the newspaper.
The FBI’s action comes just a few weeks after Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson called protests “an act of terrorism” that “threatens our nation.”
Read Jackson’s statement below:
Ferguson, MO — At approximately 4:15 p.m. on August 18, Ferguson police officers arrived at the home of an individual in the 1000 block of Fenton with a request to serve a search warrant. Officers entered the residence and discovered that there was a domestic violence injury warrant. The officers exited the residence a second time to render assistance as the individuals physically attempted to evade their attempts to serve the warrant at which time one of the officers fired his weapon. The officer, an 18 year and 5th grade police officer, has returned to duty following the incident. The incident is still under investigation and the officers continue to cooperate with federal officers. In response, the FBI has opened a preliminary investigation to determine if any federal statutes have been violated during the Ferguson protests over Brown’s death. The U.S. Attorney’s office has also opened a civil rights investigation into the circumstances of this incident.
