Videos are often split over several cameras, both handheld and in-body. While in-body cameras have been used for video of sporting events and news reports, these days they are being used for a wider variety of content, from social commentary to action sports. When you combine this with the ability to shoot live music, one can see how the concept of a live music video can attract a lot of interest.
How many are there?
There are currently more than 9,000 cameras throughout the world that shoot the music video format. More cameras are being added all the time; for example, some models shoot live video in London now and in 2016 we’ll be taking the next step to film live music in Tokyo.
How does this help to improve the production value of music videos?
A lot. Some of the best performing artists in the music industry are able to capture the best performances in the best quality footage possible. This is because they have the most professional equipment around so capturing the music video can mean some of the best performances in the world that are never captured anywhere else.
More than a year ago, when Vimeo bought LiveLikeMusic, the aim was to bring these videos into the public domain and to raise awareness of how easy it is to create and distribute these videos. Since the launch of LiveLikeMusic, footage has been shared over a million times but much of it has been of little interest to most people. We wanted to understand the passion for music videos and wanted to change that. We found that having this content publicly available and accessible gave us the opportunity to see the music videos that would otherwise go unheard. We were able to see the raw footage of live musicians who were playing all over the place and then use the live music to help us create the best entertainment we had ever created. This approach has helped us grow with our audience and we hope the idea is a success.
