What horse number wins the most? – Belmont Horse Racing Today

The second-place horse, a five-year-old Irish warhorse that’s worth $8,300, will not win. It’s likely a colt, but a third-place winner won’t return the favor.

What was the most expensive race?

A $5,834-a-head race at the 2011 Kentucky Derby attracted a record crowd of 16,638.

What’s next?

More racing in Kentucky, though there’s nothing official in sight. There have been talks of building a track in the Cincinnati area.

“It sounds great. We’d love to have a big track in Cincinnati with our fans here,” Kentucky Derby promoter Fred Malek told USA TODAY Sports. He said they aren’t talking about building a new track, but a site is being considered in Cincinnati, a suburb near Cincinnati International Airport.

“I’m not sure how long we’d have the Kentucky Derby as the only main event at the airport. We’d want to have it around Thanksgiving and Christmas, just to continue to grow that tradition into the future.”

Malek said no announcement has been made, but “there is a lot of interest” and the two sites might go for $30 million before any deal is sealed.

Kentucky Derby officials are not talking about changing the format of the race or moving to a different time zone.

More Derby

The Kentucky Derby will be repeated Sept. 21-22. And there’s other racing this weekend too.

A one-day race at the Preakness, three races on the PGA Tour’s Memorial Day weekend. An annual two-day race Saturday and Sunday in Kentucky, one more the day after the Derby.

The Kentucky Derby, part of the Kentucky Derby Festival — a three-day, four-stream horse racing event that goes through Dec. 10 — is scheduled through Monday. It had been set in July.
