What does the grant application process involve?

In general, grant applications must be received by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) by the date specified on the grant application.

You will then be asked to create and submit a grant application. The Office of National Drug Control Policy’s grant application and other application materials are available at

If you are accepted in the program, you will be given an application fee that is based on projected project funding and your level of responsibility (grant amount as calculated under the program’s definition of responsibility). Grants are awarded in accordance with the grant guidelines. As a general rule, projects are evaluated at the rate of grant dollar values of $50,000 up to $150,000, and project evaluation is based on the number of hours worked during the project. Applicants receive two copies of their application when they apply.

NOTE: You may submit a multiple-year grant program for multiple years and multiple projects. The grant amount will be allocated in the following order: the first project for which the total amount requested has been submitted in the application; any other projects for which grant proposals have been submitted through the Office of National Drug Control Policy, and any other proposed projects.

When you apply to start a grant you and your sponsors will provide detailed information on your plans (e.g., what kind of organization you are and what kind of services will you provide) and how you will ensure funding in the way outlined on each application. Each request will include a cover letter and a short writing sample. Grant applications are available from the grant site. All information submitted along with a grant application is subject to review and approval by the Office of National Drug Control Policy staff.
