The University of Michigan is now in the process of hiring an independent review party to conduct an internal investigation into the behavior of assistant women’s basketball coach Kathy Beauregard. According be AnnArbor.com, the university is seeking one “exemplar candidate” – someone who could lead the team and “perform to a high standard.”
Beauregard is in her sixth season with UM. She is no longer a player, but coaches and other coaches are still encouraged to interact with her. Her salary is $600,000 a year – about $100,000 a year less than the $1.8 million a year she made during her most recent five-year, $4.8 million deal with the Washington Spirit.
Beauregard has been at the University of Detroit Mercy, where she has coached women’s and men’s basketball, since 2001. She was the head coach at Loyola University in Chicago and coached women’s basketball from 2004-09. She also served two summers as associate head coach of the New Jersey/New York Liberty U23 women’s basketball team.
Last season, she was hired as head coach of the women’s basketball team in August as part of a change in the administration of Mike Hopkins, the school’s president. But after an investigation by the university into alleged sexual misconduct and verbal abuse, the school fired the coach in December after an investigation into his employment history.
A previous report in the Michigan Daily revealed last month that while she was coaching at UNLV, a fellow coach had accused her of slapping and touching him when he had problems with his groin area.
According to Michigan’s athletics communications director Bob Diaco, Beauregard’s attorney has said she intends to “vigorously defend” her rights. But Diaco said the university is aware of the issues surrounding her and she is considering her options.
Bealgar played for Hopkins from 1991-93 and was a star high school player, earning All-Big West Conference and All-American honors.
Hopkins, who was the school’s basketball coach during an extended season of success, has been gone for two seasons, but has been considered for other coaching jobs.
